Unfortunately, in Québec, that’s not possible.

However, there are still ways to protect your loyal companion.

In fact, animals in Québec are not considered legal “persons”, and therefore do not have the legal capacity to inherit. That said, nothing stops you from leaving a sum of money to someone you trust and who loves animals, with the specific purpose of caring for your dog after your death.

The same applies for your cat, your bird, or even your goldfish!

It’s still highly recommended to speak with that person beforehand to ensure they’re willing and able to take on that responsibility.
